Fun facts about tequila!

TQIn bars across the world, you’ll find someone tossing back tequila shots and paying for it dearly the next day! Tequila, or “To-Kill-Ya” as it’s affectionately known due to its nasty hangovers, is also Spanish for “I don’t remember doing THAT!” (wink & smile!)

All kidding aside, I only started to have an appreciation for this liquid gold after many trips to Mexico and having the opportunity to taste their premium and vast array of tequilas. After all tequila is Mexico’s national drink and also its pride and joy. And let’s not forget to tip our sombrero in praise to tequila’s most famous cocktail, the magnificent margarita which represents a “fun in the sun” tropical drink for me!

Whether you are an aficionado (fan) or a newbie to tequila, here are some fun facts to share with your buddies next time you belly up to the bar! TQ2

  • Tequila takes its name from the city of Tequila located in Jalisco State where it is produced.
  • Tequila which is like champagne (which has to be produced only in Champagne France) can only legally be produced in the state of Jalisco and very limited in four other states of Mexico to be authentic.
  • The city of Tequila produces an astonishing 230,000 liters of tequila every day.
  • Tequila is made from the sap of the blue agave plant – a sweet cactus-like plant.* It takes blue agave  8-10 years to mature before it can be harvested into tequila.*The flowers of the plant are pollinated by bats. (Yes…bats!)
  • *Tequila never comes with a worm in the bottle, that’s mezcal (another liquor made from any variety of agave plant & not as smooth as tequila).
  •  Tequila is actually intended to be savored  & enjoyed slowly like a cognac or single malt so that the characteristics of the product are appreciated.
  • Tequila tastings are the new wine tastings and these events also pair tequila with food!

PS next time you are in Playa del Carmen, be sure to drop into Tequila Town at Constituyentes Ave. and browse their collection of tequilas. You TQ3name it, they have it!

”One tequila, two tequila, three tequila…hammock”!
