New Year’s Eve Traditions-Mexico!

14895_feliz¡Feliz año nuevo! Happy New Year!

Well the Mayan prediction that the world would end on December 21, 2012 didn’t happen so I was stuck having to finish up Christmas shopping after all 🙂
It’s almost New Year’s Eve, and while we won’t be visiting Playa del Carmen (MX) till January, we can still partake in some time-honored Latino traditions for ringing in the New Year and ushering out the old one!

From wish-granting grapes to packing a suitcase, from sweeping right down to the color of your underwear, there’s nothing that says ‘good-bye 2012 and good riddance’ like these Mexican New Year’s Eve rituals and superstitions.

At midnight, if you eat 12 small grapes on each chime of the clock, it’s supposed to bring good luck for each month of the coming year. (Buy seedless grapes; nothing takes the fun out of New Year’s Eve quite like having to perform the Heimlich Maneuver!)
Another ritual involves packing a suitcase and walking around the outside of your house which is supposed to bring adventures and travel in the New Year. (Do this ritual & maybe you too will be heading to the Riviera Maya & dipping your toes in the ocean like me this coming year!)

At midnight on New Year’s Eve, grab a broom, open the door and symbolically sweep out ‘the old’, then toss some coins on the ground and sweep them into the house for prosperity. (This is one time I won’t mind sweeping if it brings me prosperity!)

Apparently what color you wear on New Year’s Eve will influence your destiny during the next 12 months. If you were white from head to toe, you invite good luck and are to have a good year spiritually. Green clothing attracts a year of good health. Wearing red underwear is said to bring love, while yellow underwear brings wealth. And no, you can’t cheat and wear both colors. You have to decide which is more important. (I would have to say there’d be plenty of teasing if my hubby were to wear red underwear!)

However you celebrate New Year’s Eve, wishing you health and happiness from “PLAYA-Gal” and my friends at Playa Beach Condos & Villas!
