Carnaval Cozumel 2013!

14895_Carnival_Cozumel_2013I don’t know about you, but when I hear the word “Carnival”, it makes me think of merry-making, partying, dancing and overall plenty of fun. And it’s certainly safe to say FUN is the main headliner at Carnaval Cozumel which takes place February 6–13 in Cozumel Mexico! Cozumel is a beautiful island across from Playa del Carmenm and a mere 30 minute ferry ride.

“Carnaval” is to Cozumel what Mardi Gras is to New Orleans and this island boasts over a century of celebrating Carnaval in festive style! Most people may recognize Cozumel for its world-class diving and snorkeling but you may not know that it hosts one of the most dazzlingly colorful celebrations in Mexico every February!

“Carnaval” is a Mexican holiday that kicks off a five-day celebration before the Catholic lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Beginning the weekend before Lent, Carnaval is celebrated exuberantly with parades, floats, costumes, music, enchanting dancers, stilt walkers, international bands, plenty of drinks (of course!), massive crowds and festivities that last throughout the night into the wee hours of the morning. Just like Mardi Gras, picture feathers, masks, beads, costumes, and dancing in the streets till all hours! It’s like Halloween’s gone mad for a week!

People line the street, dancing with the performers and catching gifts that are showered on them. And individuals even compete for the coveted titles of King and Queen of Carnaval! This event is very family-friendly, and even schools, clubs, and community organizations spend months making floats, costumes, and practicing their dances and music. The competition increases every year and the result is evident in the elaborate costumes and floats.

The Fat Tuesday parade is the largest and best of the festival and is accompanied by a huge spectacular fireworks display.

Clearly Cozumel is full of community spirit and pride as they go all outto show both locals & tourists alike, their unique way of celebrating culture and traditions.

Word of warning…”Wink-wink” rumours have it that every Carnaval a few stragglers miss their cruise boat, so don’t let Carnaval get the best of you! It’s such a good time that you may need a vacation from your vacation after this celebratory week!

Now time to throw on your feathered mask and get your “masquerade” on!
